<h2>Chaudhary Birender Singh, and his wife Premlata Singh, resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 8</h2> <p>With campaigning for the upcoming <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/elections/" target="_self">Lok Sabha elections</a> in high spirits across the country, major political parties are gearing up for the polling day coming up on different dates, in different phases across the States. </p> <p>While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is holding rallies and roadshows with its list of star campaigners, the Opposition INDI Alliance, with the Congress at its helm is training its guns at the ruling BJP, targeting the party on the issue of electoral bonds, misuse of autonomous institutions like the ED and the CBI and the arrest of Chief Ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren. </p> <p>Meanwhile, on the campaigning front, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in a roadshow in Chennai, for which strict arrangements have been made. </p> <p>Also, leaving out the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/topic/peoples-democratic-party/" target="_self">Peoples Democratic Party</a> (PDP) from seat-sharing arrangements in J&K, INDIA bloc constituents <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/topic/indian-national-congress/" target="_self">the Congress party</a> and the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/topic/jammu-and-kashmir-national-conference/" target="_self">National Conference</a> (NC), on Monday announced a <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/elections/lok-sabha/lok-sabha-polls-2024-congress-nc-announce-seat-sharing-formula-for-jk-and-ladakh/article68043345.ece" target="_self">pre-poll seat-sharing arrangement</a> for J&K and Ladakh. </p> <p>Election Commission suspends three Tripura government employees for violating MCC</p> <p>Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission has suspended three Tripura government employees, including security personnel for violating the model code of conduct (MCC). </p> <p>They were suspended for allegedly taking part in election campaigns and political events. The suspended government officials are Partha Pratim Debroy, a government teacher; Rasu Chowdhury, an Education Department staff member; and a Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan named Kishan Debbarma. </p> <p>Clean image matters in politics, not age: Congress veteran Pradip Bhattacharya</p> <p>Pradip Bhattacharya, the 79-year-old Congress leader who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls again after two decades, asserted that age is not a factor in politics but a clean image is. </p> <p>In an interview with PTI, Mr. Bhattacharya, a contestant in the Kolkata Uttar constituency, claimed that Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, though “quite unpredictable”, will definitely be a factor in the upcoming elections”. </p> <p>“It’s true that I am quite an aged person. At this age, it is difficult to move and go to various places. But politically I am very clean, I have no black spot. I have never been to jail for any reason, never arrested by CBI or ED,” the former State Congress president said.</p> <p>Over 6,000 senior citizens and persons with disabilities vote through postal ballot in Perambalur and Karur Lok Sabha constituencies</p> <p>Over 6,000 senior citizens above the age of 85 years and persons with disabilities (PwDs) have exercised their franchise through postal ballots from their homes in Perambalur and Karur Lok Sabha constituencies. The exercise has been carried out ahead of the forthcoming general election in the State on April 19.</p> <p>Teams of officials formed in both constituencies visited the residences of senior citizens and PwDs, who had opted to cast their vote through postal ballot. This exercise was carried out on April 4, 5 and 6 in Karur Lok Sabha constituency consisting of six Assembly segments of Karur, Krishnarayapuram, Aravakurichi, Viralimalai, Manapparai and Vedasandur. </p> <p>A total number of 3,040 persons exercised their franchise through postal ballot in Karur Lok Sabha constituency during those three days. As many as 56 teams of officials were constituted in the constituency to carry the postal ballot and other items with protection to the residences of senior citizens and PwDs. </p> <p>BJP complains to EC against outfit misusing RSS’ name to create confusion</p> <p>The BJP on Monday alleged that an organisation linked to Congress leaders was misusing RSS’ name to push propaganda against the ruling party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls and urged the Election Commission to take “strict action” against them.</p> <p>A delegation of BJP leaders including its national organisation secretary Arun Singh, Sanjay Mayukh and Om Pathak approached the poll panel and submitted a complaint in this connection, demanding that an FIR be lodged against the “fake” organisation and a notice be issued to the Congress.</p> <p>There was no immediate reaction from the Congress on the allegation. </p> <p>Kerala police register 12 cases for spreading false propaganda on EVMs</p> <p>The Kerala police on Tuesday said a total of 12 cases have been registered throughout the state for disseminating false propaganda alleging that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) to be used for the Lok Sabha polls are fake.</p> <p>Among these cases, two have been reported in Malappuram district, and two each in Ernakulam and Thrissur cities.</p> <p>Additionally, one case each has been registered in Thiruvananthapuram Rural, Kollam City, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Idukki districts, the police said in a Facebook post. </p> <p>EC to install GPS location tracking system in vehicles used for LS polls</p> <p>The Election Commission has decided to install a GPS location tracking system in all vehicles that will be used for polling purposes in West Bengal, an official said on Monday.</p> <p>A communication in this regard has been sent to the poll workers, he said.</p> <p>“The GPS tracking system will be used to monitor the movement of EVMs and other polling materials from the distribution/dispersion centre and receipt centre (DCRC) to the polling station on the day before the elections, and to ensure that no tampering occurs while bringing them to the strong room after polling,” the official said. </p> <p>AIMIM backs Anandraj Ambedkar’s candidacy from Amravati ahead of Lok Sabha elections</p> <p>All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) declared its support for Anandraj Ambedkar, the grandson of B.R. That year, only nine candidates had total assets worth over ₹1 crore each. It shot up to 39 in the election held in 2014. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the total number of crorepati candidates increased to 45, according to an analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of the candidates carried out by the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/elections/lok-sabha/lok-sabha-elections-phase-1-adr-analysis-shows-41-constituencies-have-three-or-more-candidates-with-criminal-cases/article68042700.ece" target="_self">poll rights body Association for Democratic Reforms </a>(ADR).</p> <p>The candidates of the Congress party had topped the list of crorepati candidates in 2009. Of the total nine on the list, four were Congress candidates. There were two Independent candidates and one member each representing the Communist Party of India (Marxist); Nationalist Congress Party; and Bahujan Samaj Party in the crorepati club. Shashi Tharoor of the Congress had the highest total assets of about ₹21.2 crore in among the candidates from the State in 2009. </p> <p>Former Union Minister, wife to join Congress today</p> <p>Union Steel Minister in the previous Modi government, Chaudhary Birender Singh, and his wife Premlata Singh, who resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on April 8 will join the Congress party at Delhi on April 9. </p> <p>Mr. Singh told <em>The Hindu</em> that he and his wife, a former MLA, will join the Congress along with many supporters. </p> <p>He said that he had been very vocal on issues, including the farmers’ agitation against the three farms laws, the wrestlers’ protest, and the Agniveer Scheme, and these too were among the reasons for his decision to quit the BJP. </p> <p>Union Home Minister Amit Shah to attend mega poll rally in Assam’s Lakhimpur today</p> <p>Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend a mega rally in Assam’s Lakhimpur and a roadshow in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, on Tuesday. </p> <p>Taking to social media on X, Amit Shah said on Monday, “Tomorrow, will be in Assam to attend a mega rally in Lakhimpur Lok Sabha and a roadshow in Tinsukia (Dibrugarh Lok Sabha). Assam is set to secure Modi Ji’s goal of ‘400 paar’. ”Eager to meet the state’s vibrant people,” the tweet added. </p> <p>PM Modi to conduct roadshow in Chennai on April 9; strict traffic arrangements in place</p> <p><a href="https://www.thehindu.com/topic/Prime_Minister_Narendra_Modi/" target="_blank">Prime Minister Narendra Mod</a>i is visiting Chennai on April 9 evening and will participate in a roadshow organised to canvas votes for <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/topic/bharatiya-janata-party/" target="_blank">Bharatiya Janata Party’s</a> (BJP’s) candidates in the heart of the capital city. The Greater Chennai City Police has made elaborate security arrangements in view of the high-profile visit and campaign. </p> <p>Police said the Prime Minister will fly in a special aircraft from Maharashtra and arrive at 6.05 p.m. in the Chennai Airport. Later, he will travel by a car to T. Nagar. His roadshow will begin at 6.30 p.m. from Panagal Park — which was once a prominent place for public meetings. From there, the roadshow will cross the busiest road — Thiyagaraya road (Pondy Bazaar) — and is expected to conclude around 7.35 p.m. After wrapping up the campaign, his convoy will reach the Raj Bhavan, where he will be staying for the night. <br /> </p>
